Living with American Akita is cozy and comfortable. American Akita: reviews, photos, video
Dogs in my life have been since childhood. First, a lapdog, then my Great Dane became my dream (and in my student years I realized this dream). Then she bought a Labrador and, once having arrived with him at the exhibition, she saw a miracle dog - it was an American Akita. And when my husband and I decided to buy a house, there was an opportunity to realize another dream. From that moment began our love of Akita.
American Akita is a large, proud, self-confident dog. They are quite calm, balanced, do not require special attention to themselves. That is, they will meet you, kiss, pay tribute, and then leave to go about their business.
Breeder's Observations: American Akita is almost invisible in the house. It is compact and calmly in place. This dog will not get underfoot and interfere with life. Perhaps this is a distinctive feature of the breed. It’s cozy and comfortable to live with them.
American Akita does not need intense physical activity. This is not a working dog, so you need to load it just so much that it feels good. Naturally, Akits need walking and movement, but they can not be compared with husky or Samoyeds - working dogs, the distinguishing feature of which is endurance. Akita enough 40 minutes of training per day, when there is serious preparation for the exhibitions. Of course, when the Akit became not one, but four, simulators appeared in the house: a treadmill, cavaletti, etc. to prepare dogs for large shows. But, nevertheless, these are quite calm and sedentary dogs.
However, the American Akita is a powerful dog, which, if necessary, can withstand quite large loads. For example, our dogs can run after a bicycle 7-10 kilometers. It is noteworthy that for all their power, they are very fast and dodgy.
American Akita do not like other dogs. But if they treat small dogs with neglect, then large dogs are perceived as rivals. However, for example, at exhibitions they clearly recognize dogs of their breed and treat them more loyally. However, if they are not touched, the conflicts themselves do not provoke. But if a fight happens, then it will be a serious fight, and Akita, by virtue of its power, can easily injure another dog. This must be remembered. However, this does not mean that the Akites will do this for no reason. Most often it is self-defense.
Breeder's Observations: Regarding relationships with other pets, everything is individual here. If a puppy of the American Akita is brought to the house where the cats live, he will perceive them quite normally. But as for our dogs, other people's cats stopped looking into our yard.
Aggression towards a person in American Akita is a disqualifying defect. They are plush and very affectionate.
American Akits are great for children. I won’t talk about my dogs — they don’t communicate with young children, with the exception of guests — but many bought puppies from us for families with children, and there are no problems. It all depends on education.
American Akita has a very high pain threshold. Therefore, they stoically tolerate, for example, painful veterinary manipulations.
Observation of the breeder: There is an opinion that it is very difficult to gain credibility with the American Akita, and to some extent I agree with this. I worked at one of the exhibitions with foreign Akits, whom I saw for the first time in my life and who did not understand Russian speech, and everything went fine. Apparently, the dog understood that I was working with Akita, that I know which button to press on. But I also know a lot of cases when handlers, accustomed to working with more active and obedient dogs, could not find a common language with American Akits.
American Akits completely tolerate loneliness. They just lie down and sleep; they don’t have crazy energy like many other breeds. Rather, they even enjoy being alone and sometimes want to be alone with themselves and take a break from everyone.
American Akits are silent. We must try very hard so that they make at least some sounds.
American Akits are loyal dogs and it is quite difficult to survive a change of owners, although it happens that they are looking for a new family. Sometimes, unfortunately, people take them, not realizing that this is a large, serious breed, quite wayward, and can not cope.
American Akita Education and Training
American Akita is a companion dog. Its main purpose is to be with people. This is not a "professional" guard and not a hunter.
I saw a lot of American Akits that I seriously engage with. They master freestyle, agility, guard and guard service, and a general training course ... anything! But keep in mind that American Akita up to 2 years of age cannot be trained to bite, and, in principle, this is not a very suitable “job” for representatives of the breed. Indeed, in genetics there is a lack of aggression towards people, and if you teach a young dog with an unformed mind to manifest this aggression, there is a mismatch, and “breakdowns” occur, after which it is extremely difficult, almost impossible to restore the dog. Although they protect the territory.
People often ask me: what will they do if thieves get into the house? I reply that I do not know until no one has expressed a desire to try.
If you start classes from childhood, American Akita lends itself well to training. Nevertheless, the blood of German shepherds flows in this breed, and this is manifested.
For me, training is not the most important thing. I work with dogs more precisely on contact in order to achieve obedience - just for a comfortable life and safety of the dog itself. Plus, since the dogs are exhibition, we are engaged in exhibition training.
Breeder's recommendation: American Akita doesn’t really like to play with a ball and aport, so it’s quite difficult to motivate them with a toy. Among the Akita there are food workers who are simply obsessed with food, and there are those who are absolutely calm about “sweets”. Most likely, the best motivation for them is contact with the owner or handler (eyes, voice, exchange of positive emotions).
We begin the socialization of puppies at the age of two weeks, when their eyes open and they begin to hear. Loud sounds, the presence of people, the inclusion of a tape recorder while eating, a lawn mower, a saw - accustoming to all this begins at a very young age. Plus, as soon as all vaccinations are done, I take each puppy and travel with him to the city. We walk among people, among cars, on pedestrian crossings. Due to the fact that the American Akita is a contact dog and loves people, socialization is easy.
But do not flatter yourself too much. If you take the American Akita as a “teddy bear” and don’t make an effort to gain authority from the dog, the dog will be pretty wayward and will do what she wants, not you. However, if you convey to your pet the thought that “this is not possible”, she will listen to your opinion.
Supervision of the breeder: When I undertake to train other people's dogs, I never do this in the absence of the owners. I teach people how to handle a dog. Because it is for a person to explain what a dog’s language is, how to understand it, what a dog wants, how to convey the necessary information to it. Communicating with our dogs, we understand what they want from us - and sometimes they need only one gesture, half-look, half-sentence.
Since American Akita is a heavy dog, dysplasia is one of the genetic diseases that the breed is susceptible to. All my dogs must undergo dysplasia tests, and they are all healthy.
There are cases of allergies. Moreover, one of our dogs is allergic to its own coat during molting, but when the molting ends, everything goes by itself.
American Akita molt 2 times a year. I solve the problem simply: every week my dog, blow it with a compressor and remove the coat. Therefore, molting takes place with minimal discomfort for us.
Breeder's Observations: American akitas are exceptionally clean dogs, quickly get accustomed to the toilet, and a two-time walk is enough for them.
I wash the dogs as they get dirty and before the shows. If the exhibition is every week - then the dogs wash every week, regardless of the weather. It’s not difficult for me to wash 4 akita in one day. And since our dogs live in the house and sleep with us in bed, it is important that they are clean, soft and fluffy. But their wool is self-cleaning; in principle, they do not go dirty.
American Akits love winter and snow. They burrow into the snowdrifts and bastards. They tolerate summer calmly, adapt to the heat: they choose a cooler place and lie there until evening.
Be sure to regularly cut our nails, brush our ears and teeth. I believe that brushing your teeth is required at least 1 time per month.
I am a fan of ready-made feed. I tried both cereal and mixed nutrition, but still came to dry food. Firstly, for a large number of dogs it is difficult to cook food, and secondly, it is quite difficult to balance the diet. I watch my dogs and see what shape they are in. Therefore, for us this is the best way out.
But do not forget about vitamins. Once every six months, each dog gets its own course. Adult dogs are simply supporting multivitamins, young dogs - collagen, chondrosamine, chondroprotectors.
