Pregnancy, birth and birth in bull terriers - what the owner needs to know
Bull Terrier Point
The first estrus at the bull terrier occurs in 6-12 months. It takes place twice a year (there are exceptions) and lasts from 7 to 28 days (on average - two weeks). At this time, the bitch may become pregnant.
The cycle is experienced in 4 stages:
|Proestrus||4 to 9 days|
|Dogs in this period are interested in bitches, but without reciprocity.|
|Estrus||4 - 13 days|
|The bitch becomes supportive to the representatives of the "stronger sex", conception is possible. If you touch the tail of the "lady", she takes it to the side and lifts the pelvis.|
|Metestrus||60 - 150 days|
|Bitch stops letting males. At the beginning of this period, false fraud is possible.|
|Anestrus||from 100 to 160 days|
|Ovarian activity decreases. There are no significant external signs.|
Bull Terrier Pregnancy
You can knit a dog when it reaches 2 - 2.5 years. If the dog is older than 4 to 5 years, pregnancy and childbirth can be associated with complications.
IMPORTANT! “Pregnancy for health” is one of the most dangerous myths of many owners!
Pregnancy is not a healing process. This is a strong stress and load on the immune system and internal organs. Therefore, only a perfectly healthy dog should give birth.

As a rule, bull terrier pregnancy lasts 63 days. The maximum run-up is from 53 to 71 days, in this case puppies are born viable.
1. At an early stage (the first 3 weeks after mating), it is impossible to determine if the bitch is pregnant.
2. On the 4th week with the help of ultrasound, you can estimate the approximate number of puppies.
3. At the 5th week, the sides become more convex (sometimes there is no sign until the 7th week), the skin of the nipples becomes lighter.
4. At the 6th week, puppies can be probed. After this, the size of the fruit increases, the nipples become softer and larger.
IMPORTANT: It is better if the veterinarian performs palpation, you can damage the fruit yourself, especially in dogs of small breeds.
During pregnancy, the dog should move, but not overwork. A future mother should not be without extreme need to worry, make long trips by car or public transport, keep in a noisy cramped room. If during a dog’s pregnancy a condition suddenly changes, she refuses to eat, has a fever or discharge from the genitals, it is worth contacting a veterinarian.
The second half of pregnancy may be characterized by minor mucous secretions. Allocations become abundant, yellowish or greenish - which means that labor is approaching. 1 to 2 days before birth, the dog begins to worry, whine, lick the genitals, scratch the walls or floor. Pulse, breathing, urination become more frequent. The dog refuses to feed and constantly drinks.
False pregnancy in the bull terrier
False pregnancy is common in dogs of all breeds. This is the name of the psycho-physiological state of a bitch who has not been fertilized, but at the same time shows signs of pregnancy. In this case, the dog diligently equips the "nest", it may even experience something similar to fights. As a rule, false pregnancy is observed in dogs with irregular mating and is associated with impaired hormonal development.
IMPORTANT: If the dog is sterilized, a false pregnancy does not occur!
If the bitch began to show signs of a false pregnancy, it is necessary to remove the toys. Self-licking of the nipples enhances the manifestation of symptoms of false pregnancy. This can be prevented by putting on a dog collar and blanket. Limit your protein intake.
If the bitch shows aggression, extreme agitation, or physical problems (such as mastitis) appear, medication is needed. Contact your veterinarian.
IMPORTANT: False pregnancy may be a symptom of a disease (hypothyroidism or liver dysfunction).
With frequent severe manifestations of false pregnancy, you should contact the clinic for examination. Most likely, you will be offered to donate blood for biochemistry and hormones.
It is necessary to prepare everything you need in advance. "Rodzal" should be warm, ventilated and calm, as well as comfortable for a person - you have to spend quite a lot of time there. A week before the expected birth, transfer the female to “Rodzal”, she should get used to this place.
Prepare a box for newborns (special loungers are on sale). You will also need: an infrared heating lamp, disposable diapers, a heating pad or a plastic bottle with warm water, cotton wool, cotton rags, towels (pieces 8), a hand wash, a thermometer, a milk replacer, a bottle and nipples, a muzzle, a collar, a leash, glucose solution.
Keep your veterinarian phone number visible.
The day before the event, the dog refuses food, body temperature drops. The bitch becomes restless, tears the litter - makes a nest.
IMPORTANT: The dog must be carefully monitored so that it does not climb into a hard-to-reach place.
When the birth begins, call the veterinarian - warn him to be in touch just in case. Put the collar on the bitch. Then your task is to sit still and not fuss. You can do yoga or meditate.
Stage of labor
|First||about 12-24 hours||The cervix relaxes and expands, mucus comes out, contractions without attempts, the temperature is lowered||The dog is worried, often changes its position, looks back at the stomach, frequent breathing, vomiting is acceptable|
normal up to 24 hours
|Amniotic fluid leaves, the temperature normalizes, the abdominal walls are tense, contractions are adjoining with attempts, puppies leave the birth canal|
The dog stops worrying, often breathes, lays down in one place, pushes, after the fetus is released, tears the placenta and licks the puppy
|Third||It turns out the last or place or the baby part of the placenta. Usually, after the birth of a puppy, after 10-15 minutes the last comes out. Sometimes several come out, after 2-3 puppies.||The bitch seeks to eat all the aftermaths, do not allow it. One or two is the maximum, otherwise there may be intoxication (diarrhea, vomiting).|
A puppy is born in a “package” - a transparent film called the last. Usually a bitch rips it apart and eats it. Do not be alarmed - this is normal; she will not eat the puppy.
IMPORTANT: Do not allow the bitch to eat the afterbirth if it is greenish-black in color with a putrid odor.
Keep track of the number of afterbirths, there should have been as many as puppies. Sometimes the placenta can remain inside and exit only at the end of childbirth.
IMPORTANT: If at least one trace remains inside - this is fraught with inflammation for the bitch (metritis). If you are not sure that all the aftercare left, be sure to take the dog to an ultrasound scan.
A puppy can be born when the bitch is standing. It falls to the ground, but as a rule, it is harmless. Intervention is justified only if the mother is shocked, ignores the cubs or attacks them. In this case, call an experienced breeder - he will tell you what to do.
Something went wrong…
If the mother is trying to attack the puppies, put a muzzle on her and take each puppy out of earshot. Remove the film, wipe the puppy with a towel, remove mucus from the mouth and nostrils with a syringe. If the puppy does not breathe, try rubbing it with a towel. Sometimes artificial respiration is required - carefully breathe air into the puppy's mouth and nose. The chest should be raised. Repeat every 2-3 seconds until the puppy begins to breathe on its own. Place the puppies in a cardboard box with a heating pad. Make sure the kids are not burned.
IMPORTANT: Remember that the dog is in a state of shock, talk to her gently, calm down.
After delivery, when the bitch rests and drinks milk with glucose, try introducing her puppies again. Put your mother on your side, hold your head, stroke. The second person can bring the puppy to the nipple. If the bitch has adopted a puppy, you can carefully put the rest. But keep holding her.
Even if all is well, one should not relax. After feeding, clean the puppies, wash their backside. If the dog calmly licks the puppies, you can choose: risk leaving them in their care or take the box away and return to the next feeding.
Sometimes, in the first hours after giving birth, due to shock, a bitch ignores puppies: she refuses to feed, wash or stay with them. Here you have to force the bitch to feed the puppies, but you have to wash the babies yourself. Massage (clockwise) the perineum with a cotton swab dipped in warm water to stimulate excretion of feces and urine.
Sometimes a bitch tries to kill offspring. But it's better to make her feed the puppies anyway. Put a muzzle on it and fix it in a lying position. One person can hold it, and the second can apply puppies to the nipples. Artificial feeding does not replace breast milk, so use it only as a last resort.
Important: Puppies need full feeding every 2 hours.
As a rule, sooner or later a bitch still accepts puppies. Cases where hatred is persistent are extremely rare.
Caution: Whatever happens, even if the bitch eats all the babies, do not blame her. Having puppies was your idea, and it was you who made the bitch give birth. She does not understand what she is doing, hormonal disruptions and shock force her to behave in a completely unusual way to her.
Caesarean section is the surgical removal of puppies when they cannot be born naturally. If you leave the puppies within the reach of the female anesthetics leaving, she can kill them.
Eclampsia is a milk fever associated with a lack of calcium. Symptoms: anxiety, semi-unconscious state, throwing, sometimes convulsions. Calcium injection can work wonders in this case.
Mastitis is a bacterial infection of the mammary glands. Symptoms: temperature, lack of appetite. The affected nipple is hot, sore and swells. A veterinarian consultation and antibiotics are required.
Metritis - inflammation of the uterus after childbirth. Reasons: delayed afterbirth, injury or a dead puppy. Symptoms: dark discharge, loss of appetite, high fever. Urgent antibiotic treatment is required, possibly a smear test.
